Frequently Asked Questions
Answers on online lessons, tutor matching, scheduling, safeguarding and bookings. If your question isn’t here, we’re happy to help.
Getting started
What happens in the free consultation?
We begin with a complimentary 20–30 minute consultation by phone or video call to understand your child’s personality, learning style, current academic standing and specific goals. This helps us build a complete picture before we recommend anything.
There is no obligation to go ahead afterwards.
How quickly will you reply to my enquiry?
We aim to respond to all enquiries within 24 hours. You can book a free consultation online, call us or send a WhatsApp message.
How do you match my child with a tutor?
Based on the consultation, we hand-pick an expert tutor whose subject expertise, teaching style and personality are the best fit for your child. We never assign tutors at random; every match is thoughtful and deliberate.
Our tutors attend or have attended Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, UCL and other leading universities. Meet our tutors
What if the tutor isn’t the right fit?
Your child’s first lesson is an opportunity to confirm chemistry and rapport. If the match doesn’t feel right for any reason, we’ll immediately suggest an alternative tutor at no extra cost.
How much does tutoring cost?
Pricing on enquiry — discussed at your free consultation.
Prices are as quoted at the time of booking, in the local currency (for example, GBP for the UK).
Is there a free trial lesson?
We don’t offer free trial lessons, but every family starts with a free 20–30 minute consultation, with no obligation, where we discuss your child’s needs, the set-up for lessons and scheduling.
What equipment does my child need?
We’ll talk through the set-up at your free consultation. Lessons take place on Google Meet with a shared online whiteboard.
Are lessons one-to-one?
Yes. All our lessons are one-to-one.
Online lessons
How do online lessons work?
Every lesson is a live one-to-one session on Google Meet with a shared online whiteboard. Students and tutors can write, draw, annotate and share screens in real time, making online tuition just as collaborative and hands-on as sitting side by side.
All materials are shared digitally, and lesson notes are available for review after each session.
Which platform do you use?
Live lessons take place on Google Meet with a shared online whiteboard.
How long are lessons?
Sessions are typically 60 or 90 minutes, scheduled weekly at a time that suits your family.
How will I know how my child is getting on?
After every session, your tutor provides a written summary of topics covered, homework set and areas to focus on. We schedule regular check-ins with parents to review progress, adjust the learning plan and make sure we’re on track to meet your goals.
Homeschooling families also receive comprehensive half-termly reports detailing progress and areas for development.
Scheduling and time zones
When do lessons take place?
Tutoring sessions take place 7 days a week, scheduled at a time that suits your family.
Do you teach students outside the UK, in other time zones?
Yes. We are based in London and teach online, so we work with students across the UK and internationally, and lessons are scheduled at a time that suits your family, wherever you are.
We teach expatriate families preparing for UK school entrance, and international students following British curricula.
Do you offer in-person lessons?
Our lessons take place online. For families in London, a limited number of in-person lessons can be arranged on enquiry; just ask at your free consultation.
Can you work around a boarding-school timetable?
Yes. We offer flexible scheduling around term-time and half-term breaks for students at boarding schools.
Subjects and curricula
Which curricula do you teach?
We teach the UK National Curriculum; 7+, 11+, 13+ and Common Entrance; GCSE and IGCSE; and A-Level.
Which subjects do you cover?
We offer tuition in over 30 subjects. See Online Tuition for the main subject areas, or ask us about your requirements at your free consultation.
Do you prepare students for entrance exams, admissions tests and interviews?
Yes. We prepare students for 7+, 11+, 13+ and Common Entrance, GCSE and A-Level exams, university admissions tests (TMUA, ESAT, TARA, LNAT, UCAT) and admissions interviews, including Oxbridge. See Exam Preparation.
Do you offer homeschooling?
Yes. We provide full or part-time home education programmes, delivered by subject-specialist tutors and based on the UK National Curriculum. See Homeschooling.
Tutors and safeguarding
How are your tutors vetted?
Every tutor at Mayfair Scholars is personally interviewed by our founding team. We verify identity and academic credentials and conduct thorough reference checks.
Enhanced DBS checks are currently in progress and not yet complete for all tutors. We’re happy to confirm the status of an individual tutor’s check on request.
Should a parent be nearby during lessons?
Online sessions should take place in a way that keeps the student visible and appropriately supervised where age-appropriate. We recommend that a parent or guardian is reasonably available nearby for younger students.
Tutors may not contact students or parents outside agreed communication channels (for example, no personal social media contact).
How do I raise a safeguarding concern?
Please report any safeguarding concern immediately to enquiries@mayfairscholars.co.uk. We will act on all concerns in line with our safeguarding policy.
Bookings, payment and cancellations
How do I pay?
Payment is due before or after each session (by agreement), by bank transfer or another agreed method.
Can I cancel or reschedule a lesson?
Yes. Please give at least 3 days’ notice to reschedule or cancel a session without charge. Sessions cancelled with less notice are charged in full.
Full details are in our Terms and Conditions.
Is there a cooling-off period?
Yes. If you’re a consumer booking online or by phone, UK law (the Consumer Contracts Regulations 2013) gives you 14 days to cancel from the date of booking. If you ask us to start sessions within that 14-day period, you may still cancel, but you’ll pay for any sessions already delivered.
See our Terms and Conditions.
How do I stop lessons altogether?
Either party may end the tutoring arrangement with 7 days’ written notice. Unused pre-paid sessions are refunded unless cancelled within 3 days of the lesson.
See our Terms and Conditions.
Still have a question? Get in touch and we’ll reply within 24 hours. Our Terms and Conditions set out the full booking and cancellation policy.
